Microsoft Exchange as a Hosted Service

September 5th, 2007

What is Microsoft Exchange?
In its simplest terms, Microsoft Exchange is POP3 mail on super steroids. Differing from regular email, Exchange has a host of additional features that make it a very powerful productivity tool. For me one of its biggest advantages is the synchronization. All folders, contacts, tasks and calendar items are saved on the server, not the client. Read the rest of this entry »

Reseller Web Hosting in vertical markets

September 5th, 2007

We have noticed a recent shift in the Reseller web hosting business toward hosted applications and vertical solutions. Vertical solutions we’re defining as a hosted solution for an industry where you target that industry instead of general web hosting. An example is building a configurable website for Realtors with all of hte functionality they need. Then each realtor gets their own version of the website with their logo and name. The real estate industry has the most mature hosted website applications like this, but other are coming on the web hosting scene. Mortage brokers, churches, artists, and musicians are other areas that are seeing a lot of interest.

Instead of marketing to the general web hosting audience you then market specifically for an industry. This has become a very effective trend for growing your web hosting company.

Web hosting providers are increasingly seeing this trend and building applications to help gain new business. This all started with website builder tools and is now evolving to, basically, insutry specific website builder tools.

It is a natural evolution given the specific nature of the internet. Web hosting needs to evolve past general hosting companies and web hosting companies specializing in specific industries.

Going further up the ladder, you can lease a rack in a datacenter and fill it with your own servers, or a whole caged space in the datacenter to put in as many racks as you want. Dedicated Server Market

September 5th, 2007

Of the almost nine million North Amervican domains registered only 6% are hosted on dedicated servers. This means that 9.4 percent of domains are hosted on shared hosting plans. Given this statistic I wonder why anyone competes in the dedicated server business. The mark up per server is not that high once you factor in machine costs, datacenter costs, network costs, and support costs. Read the rest of this entry »
